The biggest edge that Edge Animate has on Flash is that animation created with Edge Animate will work with many browsers, including mobile browsers. Although Edge Animate is not as robust as Flash yet, it is capable of handling complex animations and could be implemented with responsive design as well. So is Edge Animate a replacement for Flash? It may be. Edge Animate also uses terms similar to Flash such as “stage” and “symbols.” Just as in Flash, Edge Animate also has a timeline where you can control the animation. A replacement for Flash?Įdge Animate’s interface looks very much like Flash’s. The newest version is Adobe Edge Animate CC, and it is available through the Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Edge Animate is part of that suite. Now, however, there is an Adobe Edge suite with many different programs included. What is Adobe Edge Animate?Īdobe Edge Animate is a fairly-new product by Adobe. I had reviewed 3DCart before and enjoyed it, so I decided to do another review post. It was an interesting opportunity to work with more design-type product. As a front-end web developer, I tend to work mostly with text editors and FTP clients more than the “design” programs. “Without GSAP I would have ditched front-end dev the day Flash officially died.Recently, I had a chance to try out Adobe Edge Animate. The simplicity of the GreenSock API makes learning and applying these tools in projects such a dream.” “Every time a new GSAP plugin is introduced, I'm close to bursting from excitement. Paul Lewis, “GSAP makes my job fun, because it allows me to focus on creating rich, engaging web experiences, while GSAP handles much of the implementation details behind the scenes.” it’s a great library that many people love, and I know you care deeply about performance :)”.The whole GSAP platform is, far and away, the best out there for dealing with animation of any sort.” “GSAP is free for most part - the few extra (paid) plugins are a million times worth paying for.”.“GSAP is awesome - I just dropped all my code, like a thousand lines of code and everything is so so much simpler, smoother and much easier to read for other developers! You have no idea how cool it is to offload that thought process to you guys!”.“No other animation library is as intuitive, rigorous, conceptually simple and well curated as GreenSock’s.”.There is no support for canvas at the moment. If you are going to be doing any scripting inside of Animate for HTML5 you should read up on the EaselJS docs and pay attention to the properties of DisplayObjects: as those are the things you will be animating.Īs for Draggable, it only works with DOM (and SVG). When Flash first started doing the HTML5 output there were some migration guides available but I'm not sure what the latest info is on Animate. You may notice that when you create an HTML5 document in Animate CC there are no 3D tools available in the GUI. As far as I know there is no support for 3D, so the properties rotationX and rotationY simply don't exist on those objects. The HTML5 export is quite good BUT the HTML5 canvas output does not support the same features as the swf. For the most part GSAP doesn't have any restrictions, if the value is numeric, GSAP can animate it.Īnimate CC now allows you to create files that output to both swf (ActionScript) and html5 2D canvas (JavaScript) with EaselJS (part of CreateJS). However you do need to be conscious of what properties are available to be animated. You can animate the css backgroundColor of a DOM element, the cx attribute of an SVG, the x position of an EaselJS object rendered to canvas (from Animate CC) and much more. The great news about GSAP is that it doesn't really care what you are animating or where it is being rendered.
